POOR MONUMENTS FOR THE INHABITANTS OF THE 22ND CENTURY

–Notes on embroidering

The title of this “category” was born from the film Viajo porque preciso, volto porque te amo (“I travel because I must, I return because I love you”) by Karim Aïnouz and Marcelo Gomes (2009). Toward the end of the film, we arrive at the Gorge of the River of Souls. The town built along the river is nearly deserted; 70% of its inhabitants have left. At the top of a hill stands a kind of white monolithic monument bearing a plaque that reads: Homenagem do povo do século XIX ao povo do século XX (“Homage from the people of the 19th century to the people of the 20th century”).

The name of this tribute-monument, quite remarkable and solemn, humble, resolutely gallant in its denomination and spatialization, endowed with extraordinary humor—is a gift. Thus, following the need to parody the artificial ideas of acceleration and speed in contemporary time, and given that, in any case, the notion of time as we have known it might disappear, I decided to begin making small monuments (small in scale, not out of modesty), poor (with precision), inspired by Aïnouz and Gomes’s film, for the inhabitants of the 22nd century. To create memories and miniature “heterotopias” with simple tools, about the nature of time. This is the motto of the LEPAT laboratory that brings together my work, and everything can enter this category. Yet my embroidery practice seems to be a particularly generous marker for sustaining this desire with precision.
